The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center's 8th Annual National
Faith and Community Economic Development Conference will convene this year in Monroe, LA,
February 17-19, 2005.
This year's conference theme, "The RE Conference," acknowledges the fact that regardless of
your situation in life or the status of your organization or community, we all go through a
"RE" period in which we must REfocus our efforts or REevaluate our direction to ensure that
we are on the right course. The conference is guaranteed to help participants REnew their
spirits, REdefine their organization, REevaluate their programs, and most importantly, REvive
their communities.
The Pre-registration (by February 9, 2005) fee for the three-day conference
is $195.00 per person. After the pre-registration period, the conference fees will be $230.00
per person.
"We believe that attitude and outlook are pertinent elements for a successful
venture. We as people of faith have a tremendous task upon us to be the beacons of hope and
the strength that must sustain our families, organizations and communities," says SUAREC
Community Development Specialist and Conference planner Ernie T. Hughes.
The 2005 Faith-Based Conference will offer workshops on individual
development, organizational development, and community and program development and will
reinforce the fervent point of sustaining, renewing and bringing resources in a collective
environment conducive for learning and networking.
The Conference will also offer a second tract, The Church Administration and
Management Institute. The Institute is geared towards assisting church leaders and staff
members in becoming more effective and efficient in their day-to-day operations.
"We are excited about the conference and look forward to working with
individuals to help develop their skills and to celebrate the work they are doing in the
parishes and communities across this state," says Hughes.
Highlights of the conference and a favorite amongst past participants are
the community tours, which showcase what other faith-based organizations are doing to be an
island of hope in a sea of despair, and the annual gospel concert. An added attraction to
this year's conference is the play, "When King Came." The play depicts the time when
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Monroe during the Civil Rights Movement.
