The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center's 62nd Annual Livestock
Show is set to kickoff March 3 at the Maurice A. Edmonds Livestock Show Arena in Baton Rouge.
More than 500 youth - members of Louisiana 4-H Clubs, FFA chapters and others
will travel to Baton Rouge and take center stage as they show their champion animals to a panel
of judges and other observers for the right to be called the "Grand Champion."
Participating youth bring their champion animals from parishes across the state. Judges
then determine state champions in various breeds of beef and dairy cattle, hogs, poultry,
sheep, and goats. According to Livestock Show Director James Archie, developing champion
youth is an even bigger part of the show and the events that lead up to it. And, we stress
that youth learn valuable life skills and develop character by participating in livestock
projects.

In addition to the animals being exhibited, there is also a mini-farm,
featuring a variety of small farm animals. School groups, families, and others are allowed
to tour the mini-farm throughout the show.
An awards presentation for exhibitors of champion market animals in the Show
will be held Saturday, March 5 at 9 a.m., and will be immediately followed by the Junior
Auction Sale at 10:30 a.m. For more information, please contact the Southern University
Livestock Show Office at (225) 771-3510.
